“Language should be tortured to tell the truth” was translated, projected, and tagged at public sites throughout Berlin, in 55 different languages.
The phrase is a reference to Slavoj Žižek’s 2008 essay “Language, Violence, and Non-violence” (paraphrasing Elfriede Jelinek) which discusses the symbolic violence hidden within language, and the paradox in how language is needed for community at the same time that it potentially negates it.
